The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
Description:
Goals of The American Cancer Society are to reduce incidence of cancer by 25%, reduce death from cancer by 50% and improve quality of life for cancer patients by the year 2015. We will achieve these goals by funding research to find a cure and improve treatment, educate to prevent cancer and find it early, advocate to enact laws that help us reach our 2015 goals, and help everyone touched by cancer to make it through the journey.
History:
The American Cancer Society was established in 1913, with the same goal of eliminating cancer. Since then, we become the most experienced cancer control organization in the world, funded more than $2 billion in cancer research, funded 38 Nobel Prize winners, are included in the top 10 best managed non-profits, have over 2 million volunteers and field over 1 million calls yearly to our National Call Center (24 hours a day/7 days a week) 1-800-ACS-2345.
